Mini roundabout on Church street!I wonder what thoughts the residents of Southwell have concerning the mini roundabout on Churh Street, Westgate and Market Place?
There are numerous incidents of near misses at this hazard due to the fact that very few people coming out of the Market Place exit realise that they are exiting from a side road onto a main road (Westgate/Church St). Even though the road is clealry marked with a "Give Way" sign and double dotted lines at the exit, drivers still rush through expecting people exiting from Church Street to give way!
The Highway Code clearly states that at a "Give Way" sign drivers must give way to traffic on the main road until it is safe to go. And this is what drivers approaching the roundabout from Market Place should do.
I believe the only way to make this hazard safe would be to turn the "Give Way" into a "STOP" with a solid white line and a large red Stop sign!
Anyone else have any comments or ideas?

I know a few people guilty of that. I always thought that as it was a roundabout you gave way to people from the right. Obviously not then : just goes to show that if many people had to retake their driving test after many years I suspect alot would fail (self included)! As a point of interest, why is it a mini roundabout anyway.
Welcome to the forum Antony; anyone else guilty

Mini roundabout.Yes you are quite correct - in "most" circumstances you do give way to the right at a roundabout but not in the case where one of the exits is a "Give Way".
As to why it is a roundabout - I can't really comment. Perhaps it should have been left as a normal junction with no roundabout - at least then people emerging from Market Place would be far more careful before moving out??

If I remember correctly it used to be exactly that!

I agree that a 'stop' sign would be a good idea. Drivers approaching from King Street do not realise there is a Give Way sign as they're too busy watching the traffic coming towards them. When approaching from Church Street you can't see down King Street until you're almost on the roundabout. I think there were more near misses before the roundabout was introduced.

Hi Elizabeth and welcome to the forum. Many a time you sit there in a "stalemate" not knowing who will go first
